In April, 1861 President Lincoln made a call for help to defend the Union.  A Pennsylvania businessman by the name of Mr. Kane, went around recruiting men for different regiments in northern tier Pennsylvania.  Overall, he acquired around seven-hundred men which made up about 7 companies.  The regiment gained "the tail of a buck" as their badge of honor.  You can learn much more about the "Old Bucktails" here.
