Expert Auto Service at Local Garage
McKean County Democrat August 1, 1946

The agency for Dodge and Plymouth automobiles in this area, the Smethport Garage, located across from the McKean County Court House on Main Street, also offers a complete repair and lubrication service. Housed in a modern brick structure, the garage is operated by Nicholas W. Scanlan and Bernard E. Fay, both residents of Smethport RD 1. Both Mr. Scanlan and Mr. Fay have had considerable experience in automobile and airplane engine repair.

One of the finest lubrication racks in this section is situated on the West side of the first floor of the garage, while a modern repair shop is located in the basement of the building. Both the repair shop and lube rack are manned by men who know the business -- experts in their line.

Repair work is done on all makes of cars. Mr. Fay is in active charge of this department. A veteran in this type of work, he was formerly employed by both the Fay and McKiernan and Thomas Garages in Smethport. Later he worked in the shop of Murray-Paige in Olean, before starting his own garage in Crosby. His entrance into the army in August 1942, interrupted this venture. Attaining the rank of technical sergeant, he saw foreign duty in the 8th Air Force in England, where he serviced many of the giant B-24 bombers that wrecked such havoc on occupied Europe and Germany. He was discharged in Sept. 1945.

Mr. Scanlan, familiarly known as "Nick", has been air-minded much of his life. He was at Parks Air College in St. Louis from 1936 until 1942. While there, he was elevated to the rank of assistant chief pilot at the famous school. A reserve pilot in the Army Air Corps, he was called to active duty as a 2nd Lieut. on May 1, 1942. He trained cadets for a time, and later was placed in charge of production of engines for trainers at Wright Field, Dayton, O. He was placed on inactive status with the rank of Captain on Oct. 4, 1945.

Mr. Scanlan is in charge of the first floor servicing of the garage. Six men are regularly employed at the Smethport Garage, in addition to Mr. Fay and Mr. Scanlan, both of whom take an active part in the large amount of work accepted in the shop.

The Smethport Garage is also the agency for Quaker State and Sterling refinery products.

The management invites your patronage. Expert work at moderate prices is a prevailing feature of the services offered at the Smethport Garage.
