County Detective E. W. Jones has been busy this
week investigating a robbery which occurred at Clermont sometime during
last Saturday night. Henry Gaynor, John V. anf Fred Anderson, roomers
at the Clermont House being the victims. It appears that sometime during
the night someone entered the rooms of these men and went through their
clothing. From Gaynor’s pants $44.00 was extracted, and in the room
occupied by the Andersons between $1.00 and $2.00 in change and a watch
was secured. The robbery was discovered when Gaynor arose Sunday morning,
and missed his pants. After a search had been made the pants were found
in the hotel office, but the contents of the pockets were missing.
Detective Jones was called into the case, and after an investigation had
been made suspicion rested on a man and woman who had spent the night
in the hotel, and had left the next morning. The detective got on the
trail of these parties, and finally located them, but after searching
them nothing was found on their person to in anyway connect them with
the robbery.
It appears that a dance was held at Clermont last Saturday night, and
for the accommodation of the boarders at the Clermont House who were attending
that function the outside door of the hotel was left unlocked, and as
the rooms of the men who were robbed had been carelessly left unlocked,
it was easy for the marauder to gain access to their rooms and secure
the plunder.
