Smethport Loses a Well Known Resident
Thomas Wescot Camp, 75, one of Smethport’s
best known and most esteemed residents, died at his home on Main Street
early Saturday morning after an illness of several weeks’ duration.
Mr. Camp was born in New Castle, Pa., June 8, 1851, a son William Davis
and Mary Ann (Lloyd) Camp. He attended the public schools of Pittsburgh
but secured employment in a glass bottle factory when only nine years
old. He worked in glass factories in Bellaire, New Castle, and Bradford.
Mr. Camp married Sarah Catherine Barber of New Castle on Nov. 7, 1882.
In 1898 he established a small glass plant of his own in DuBois.
In 1900 Mr. and Mrs. Camp moved to Smethport, where he started manufacture
of window glass on a large scale.
All of his active life was devoted to the window glass manufacturing
business and in this industry he took a leading part. His products were
marketed all over the world. He retired several years ago.
He was president of the Smethport Glass Co., Empire Glass Co. of Shinglehouse,
Camp Glass Co. of Huntington, W. V., N. Y. & P. R. R. Co., Canisteo,
N. Y., and served several terms as president of the National Association
of Window Glass Manufacturers>
Mr. Camp was a member of McKean Lodge, No. 388, F. and A. M., the Coudersport
Consistory and New Castle Lodge I. O. O. F.
Surviving are his widow, Sarah C. Camp; his daughter, Mrs. M. M. Pomeroy;
two grandchildren. Katherine Pomeroy Thornton and Thomas Camp Pomeroy;
one great-grandchild, Sally Ann Thornton; one brother, Daniel Camp,
Huntington, W. Va.; four sisters, Mrs. Norman Kieffer, Smethport; Mrs.
R. W. Calderwood, Pulaski, Pa.; Mrs. F. F. Rigall, Bradford, and Mrs.
W. H. Wescott, Charleston, W. Va.
Funeral services were held at the family home on Main Street Tuesday
afternoon, Very Rev. W. E. Van Dyke, rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal
Church officiating.
