Advertise New East Smethport School Bonds
Thursday, February 14, 1935

The Keating township school board is this week advertising for bids for the sale of a special school bond issue totaling $28,000 which was approved by the township voters at last November’s election and which amount will be used for the erection of a modern new schoolhouse at East Smethport.

Bids will be received at the Grange National Bank in Smethport on Monday, March 4.

The bonds will bear 4% interest.

Following sale of the bonds, work of erecting the needed new school will be started at the earliest possible date. Plans call for a beautiful brick structure to be located on a large plot of ground purchases by the school board some time ago and situated on the East Valley road, near Kings Corners.

The new building will replace the ancient two-story wooden school at Kings Corners, East Smethport, which must be abandoned due to the fact that the new bush hill paved highway is build so close to the entrance that the structure must be abandoned.

Will Start Work on New East End School
Mckean County Democrat Thursday, April 11,1935

It is expected that actual construction work on the new east end Smethport school building will be started in one week’s time.
Contracts for the building were awarded at a meeting of the Keating Township board of education last Friday night and the successful bidders, all of whom are now furnishing the required bonds, were as follows:
General Contractor-Phoenix & Burrit, Bradford.
Electrical Fixtures and Wiring Forrest H. Nourse, Smethport.
Heating Equipment-Arick & Eltringham, Duboise.
Plumbing-E W. Strong, Smethport.

The last three contractors were successful bidders on the Keating Township consolidate school at Farmers Valley several years ago and they did splendid work there.
Total amount of the low bids was approximately $30,000. There were twelve bidders for the general contract.
Construction of the vitally needed new school in East Smethport was made possible by authorization of a $28,000 bond issue by the township voters last November. The entire bond issue was sold to Grange National Bank of Smethport at a substantial premium recently, the Grange Bank having submitted the most attractive bid for the full amount.

The school will be built on a 5-acre tract of land owned by the school district on the E. Valley road, a short distance from Kings Corners and near the residence of George Oviatt. There is ample land for the building and a large playground.

Contracts call for completion before the start of the 1935-36 term. The new structure will replace the half century-old, out of date and dangerously located wooden building now in use.

It will be one-story fireproof construction. 80 ft. by 80 ft., with partial basement. The only wood used will be in doors and trim, the balance of material to be steel brick and concrete. Lighting will be well taken care of, both natural and artificial.

Every modern convenience will be incorporated in the new school and it will be one of the finest of its size in this section of the state. There will be four large classrooms. A cafeteria, with kitchen will be located in basement.

Keating township citizens and the school board are to be congratulated on their intentions of supplying the best possible education facilities. The township already has modern consolidation schools at Cyclone and Farmers Valley. The East End Project completes a triangle, giving complete township coverage.
