Girl Falls in Well
Miss Lucy Backus, daughter of Major J.C. Backus, of this place, had a rather narrow escape on Thursday, September 13, 1888.  Directly back of the northeast corner of the Courthouse, is an old well which has been covered up since a number of years before the new replaced the old Temple of Justice, and which is 52 feet deep, with water at the depth of 32 feet.  Miss Lucy happened to be standing over the well, little dreaming of the trap beneath her, when the decayed plank gave way, letting her down, but she being fortunately a lady of great presence of mind, jumped sideways at the time in such a way that she fell on the side of the well, thus undoubted saving her life.
