Councilman Kelly reported that the Nelson street bridge over Marvin creek was in a dangerous condition. He was instructed to post signs at the bridge to warn the public that the structure is unsafe.

The Nelson street bridge across Marvin creek in this borough of Smethport collapsed of it’s own weight Wednesday morning. The ruins now lie on the logs in the stream.

Death of Nelson Street Bridge

Part of Route 6, through East Smethport, was under water and a number of families had to be evacuated. They were still out of their homes Friday night. Water had receded from the highway but not from the homes.

One family, Indemnified only as the Elliott family spent the night in their automobile. They had gone out to help other friends and upon return to their East Smethport home found themselves “watered” out.

The McKean County Home on Route 6, toward Kane, was not affected by the high waters of the region.

Crosby came in for its share of grief with Wayne Corbett, chief of the fire department, evacuated 15 families by boats. Members of the Smethport Fire Department and the sheriff’s office assisted the Crosby firemen.

Water cascading over the Smethport Country Club golf course, coupled with the high water in Blacksmith Brook caused that portion of Route 59 to be covered a portion of that section.

The State Highways Department used one of their graders Thursday night to clear the stones and mud from the intersection of Fulton and Main Streets in the borough. Fulton Street from North Street was badly washed when the drains were unable to take care of the runoff. The flats along Marvin Creek on East Water Street were completely covered with most of the houses having water on the ground floor.

One casualty of the high water was Nelson Street Bridge is scheduled to be replaced by a new one when the flood control project gets underway in Smethport Borough. It is expected that the street will be closed to all traffic for some time.

Several places on Main Street and South Main Street in Eldred were flooded when the storm sewers were unable to care for the heavy runoff from the side streets.

Route 346 from the Allegheny River Bridge to Duke Center road was covered with water until Saturday afternoon when the river started to fall.

The Haymaker road came in for its share of high water and several families along the road reported water in the basements of their homes
