"The band saw and carriage on the short side of
the mill. This picture was evidently taken on a Sunday as the saw is shut
down and no kids were allowed in the mill. Logs were brought up a jack
slip behind the photographer, and the lumber passed out the far end of
the mill. Two men rode the carriage. On the near end was the dogger who
operated the log and board dogs; on the far end was the setter who positioned
a new log on the carriage in preparation for the first cut. The projection
sticking up in front of the band saw wheel is the nigger, used to roll
the log on the carriage and operated by two steam cylinders. The nigger
and the carriage were operated by the head sawyer who stood on the floor
beside the saw and determined how the log would be cut."
