Norwich Mill to be Moved to
Clarion County
McKean
County Democrat Potter Journal, June 16, 1920
The first of next month the last log will be sawed
at the mammoth mill of the Norwich Lumber Co. at Norwich, completing the
operations of that company on the tract of approximately 35,000 acres,
starting at the head of Potato Creek, about 12 miles from Smethport.
The mill, one of the largest in this section of the United States, will
be moved to Clarion county, where the Norwich company is beginning operations
on a large timber tract and will build a new lumber town. It is expected
that the main part of the population of Norwich will move to the new scene
of activity.
Betula and Keystone, two other thriving villages near Norwich, which
sprang up with the timber operations, will continue to thrive for a time
yet as the stave factor in the former town and the chemical plan in the
latter place have considerable work ahead.
The site of Norwich was first cleared from the then virgin forest in
that section in the fall of 1909 and the town sprang up as if by magic
in 1910, followed closely by the towns of Betula and Keystone, all three
villages within a radius of 4 miles.
As recorded in the Democrat recently the Sate of Pennsylvania has purchased
the lands over which the lumbering operations have been in progress
during the past ten years and will in all probability create a big State
preserve, upon which extensive reforestation will be conducted and game
will be encouraged to multiply.
