One of the major service industries of Smethport 1895 was repairing carriages and wagons. Horse drawn equipment was fundamental to basic transportation. "Mechanic Street" had numerous mechanics that would repair both industrial wagons worn or broken from the heavy lumber and oil industries to the more refined carriages used for personal transportation.The carriage shops in this picture were located in the front parking lot of today's Zaleski Vinyl Outlet.
