December 30, 1898 page 3 Era Reporter Visits Poor Farm The county poor farm which is one of Mckean county's most important institutions, is probably less familiar to the average citizen, than any other institution within the jurisdiction of the county officials. The farm compromises about 350 acres of land and all the buildings necessary for the accommodation of the country's poor, as well as barns and out-buldings required for the housing of horses and cattle. Tuesday afternoon, in company with County Commissioner Hungiville and Young, an Era reporter spent several hours at the county poor farm. Superintendent Thomas H. Ryan piloted the visitors through the different buildings and showed them just how the poor farm is conducted. The buildings were found to be in excellent shape, spotlessly clean and in a perfect sanitary condition. Sixty-one persons, old and young, are the guests of Superintendent Ryan at the present time. In conversation with a number of charges, the Era representative learned of the commendable manner in which the comfort and health of all in the buildings are looked after by Mr. Ryan and his estimable wife. They take a personal interest in the unfortunates who have been placed misfortune in their care and not an inmate of the poor house has anything but praise to offer for the kindness of the Superintendent and his wife. |
