This was Mr. Backus' first product:  a lock for one's coat when it was left at a
coat check at a restarurant so noone could steal your coat!  Photos show the 1912-1915 patented sytem

Mr. Backus originally invented the "lightening" coat check system in 1899
but it was not manufactured by him until 1906
