Smethport Fire Department's
New Location!
\There was construction of a new department on Nelson Street in 1957. Members built a majority of the building, and completed it in 1962. In 1960 the department became incorporated in October, in 1973 the 911 emergency communication system went into effect. The fire department built on to the new building for they received more equipment and needed to store it for when they needed it. The newer equipment is a GMC-American La France 759 gpm pumper, Chevrolet 750 gpm front mount pumper and a Ford front-mount 750 gpm pumper. Also they own a Ford 4 wheel drive minipumper and a Ford tanker.

The fire department added on a huge garage for the
equipment. Some other information on the department is that in 1960
the department became incorporated in October, in 1973 the 911 emergency
communication system went into effect, and in 1974 the constitution and
by-laws of the Ladies Auxiliary were adopted in January. Now the
age to become a member is 21 and not 18, and the department has about 150
members instead of about 60 from earlier years.
The fire department has had many renovations to
the outside and inside of the building. The department now has places
for meetings and rooms for banquets and bingo. Also, the department
has a huge garage for the equipment and a huge parking lot for members
and citizens of Smethport.
Inside the Newer Renovation of the Fire Department
As you can see, the inside
of the department was very sufficient to the needs of the department and
the members. This is where they would have meetings and hold conferences
for their local charter members.
Here are some charter members since June 19th
of 1974:
George Rowand
Pete Mayer
Benard Bell
Martin Bloss
Ben Johnson
Mike Nelson
Gary Anderson Norman
Hull, JR
Tom Nobles
Steve Lynch
James Pierotti
The department later had recieved
a paved cement drive and a huge dirt, gravel area for members, volunteers,
and people to park when at the department. The new building is still
in tact on Nelson Street, but unfortunately, the old department was tore
down and replaced by a parking lot for the bank.
