Smethport has quite a sensation on Saturday afternoon last and the matter has formed a subject for discussion ever since, and the end of such discussion is not yet. This is what produced it. Towards evening of the day mentioned, Mrs. Helen Burdick was driving a spirited horse, attached to a phaeton belonging to Dr. Freeman, down Main street. Near by was Dr. Pierce, a surgeon dentist, riding on his famous two wheel vehicle ycleped a bicycle. By some means the doctor came so near the horse driven by Mrs. B., that it, the horse became frightened and its driver remonstrated against being thus desturbed. At the story goes the doctor returned to the charge, and again attempted to frighten the horse. This though, Mrs. B., was adding insult to injery, and reaching for her driving whip, which, by the way, was no cilds weapon, she brought it down upon the head and shoulders of the doctor with the force and determinatin of a woman who believed herelf deely wronged. The two actor in the drama then went their way. Public opinion seems to censure Dr. Pierce, who although he may with the bicycle be entitled to half of the road, yet he has no right to purpisely frighten any animal traveling the other half.

Pierces' Journey On Their The Houseboat named Tourist
McKean County Miner  May 25, 1905

Dr. and Mrs. F. C.  Pierce will pass their summer vacation on board the houseboat, Tourist, in which they will cruise down the Allegheny River . The  Tourist was built at  Holmes & Gilfillan. establishment on Mechanic Street and is a model of convenience. It is 30 feet long by nine feet wide and contains a cabin, stateroom and kitchen. It is equipped with closets and lockers for the storing of clothing and provisions, and the various apartments are as cozily furnished as a small cottage. The kitchen contains a serviceable gasoline stove and water is piped to the sink from a tank overhead. Sleeping accommodations can be provided for six persons by means of folding wire beds and cots. The roof of the house forms a spacious deck and will be equipped with a movable awning cover.

It is the intention of the owners to place the boat in the water at Olean this week and proceed down the river by easy stages to Pittsburgh. The trip may be extended along the Ohio River.

A complete camping outfit and a steel skiff are part pf the equipment so that the journey can be varied by occasional sojourn upon land. It is an enjoyable method of spending the summer and Mr. and Mrs. Pierce will undoubtedly have a pleasant voyage.
