better known as “Jake” to his large circle of friends and
customers, assumed ownership of the garage in 1935. The property was purchased
from Fay and McKeirnan, two other well-known residents of this section.
The building one of the most modern garages in McKean County, was built
in 1929, and is considered to be well suited for repair work. Mr. Thomas
is no amateur in the garage business, as it might be said that he has
been associated with this type of work from the time of the beginning
of his adult life some thirty years ago. He began his career in the automobile
business in New York City in 1914. The entry of the United States into
World War I in 1917 found “Jake” one of the first to enlist
in the service of his country. He served honorably in the United States
Navy for the duration of the conflict. After leaving the Navy Mr. Thomas
returned to this section. For a time he and his brother-in-law, A. M.
“Tony” Anderson, operated the Anderson and Thomas Garage in
East Smethport. Later he went to work for Fay and McKeirnan and continued
working of that firm until he purchases their interests in 1935. Unlike
many other garage owners, “Jake” takes an active part in the
repairing of vehicles, which come into the shop. Three well-known area
men assist Mr. Thomas in his large-scale repair and lubrication business.
They are his son, Donald: William Cooper and William Thomas. Donald, like
the “old man” before him, choose the Navy for his branch of
service, when World War II came about Don was in on a good share of the
shelling that took place before and during the African invasion. The next
