The history of the store located "one door east of the Astor house" remains quite a mystery. In November of 1858, this store was owned and operated by A. N. Taylor. (See ad below) But by January 20th of 1859, the store was under the operation of J.C. Holmes. The switch would be a fairly easy one to understand. J. C. Holmes operated the store inside of the Astor House. A.N. Taylor owned and operated the store "one door east." When A.N. Taylor bought the Astor House, J.C. Holmes moved into the old A.N. Taylor store.

J.C. Holmes' Store was located "one door east of the Astor House." It was one of the newest stores, of the time, to go if you needed groceries or provisions. They even offered a shop at home system where they would deliver ordered goods to you for no extra cost.

LARGE ADDITIONS AT A. N. TAYLOR’S REGULATOR
A. N. Taylor is on hand again with a LARGER
And NICER lot of Goods
Then ever. The
Astonishing Developments!
The
GREAT SECRET!
Has leaked out, and those
PILES OF GOODS
Bought last spring and sold at such
Tremendous Low Prices,
Are all gone, and he has again filled his store
To Overflowing,
And has actually been compelled to build a
LARGE ADDITION
To his store, to make room for the
LARGE QUANTITY BOUGHT.
It is really a sight to see those new goods, and
Yet they are sold at
STILL LOWER PRICES
Than ever. It is TRULY ASTONISHING how
A. N. Taylor can sell Goods at what
Would seem such
Ruinous Prices.
But MURDER WILL OUT. The GREAT SECRET
Has been divulged
